Education on a Resume: Completed, In Progress and Unfinished
List education accurately with examples for completed degrees, ongoing study and unfinished programs, and choose placement based on relevance.
Your education section should make your qualification and its status clear. A completed degree, an expected graduation date and attendance without a degree are different facts. Use wording that keeps those distinctions visible, especially when an application asks for a particular credential.
Choose placement from relevance
CareerOneStop notes that education placement depends on your goals and career stage. A student applying for a first professional role may put relevant education near the top. An experienced applicant whose recent work is the stronger evidence may place it after experience. The heading order should help the reader understand your fit, not follow a rule disconnected from the vacancy.
Completed degree example
Bachelor of Science in Business Administration
Example University, Lahore
Completed 2024
Add a specialization or project when it helps explain the role fit. Use the actual institution and degree names. If you translate a qualification, retain the original name where helpful and avoid declaring an official equivalence you have not obtained.
Degree in progress example
Bachelor of Science in Information Systems, in progress
Example University
Expected completion: June 2027
An expected date is a plan, not an awarded qualification. Update it if your schedule changes. Include a small selection of relevant coursework only when it adds evidence missing from your experience; a long course catalogue can hide the useful details.
Attendance without a completed degree
Coursework in Business Administration
Example University, 2022–2024
If you know the verified credit total and it helps the application, you can include it. Do not place “Bachelor of…” alone in a way that suggests the degree was awarded. An application’s education field may require a more explicit “not completed” selection even when the resume wording is clear.
Decide which extras earn space
A relevant capstone, dissertation or scholarship can help explain capability. State your contribution rather than only a project title: “Compared stock records with physical counts and documented reconciliation steps for a class retail project.” This is a fictional example; use your actual work and results.
Avoid filling the section with unrelated modules, expired credentials or unverified honors. Include a grade only when requested or when it helps in your context, and show the grading scale if readers may not recognize it.
Cross-check the application form
Compare qualification names, institution names, dates and completion status across the resume, profile and application. Check the exported PDF for misplaced dates or separated headings. An accurate education section is more useful than a polished entry that leaves the award status ambiguous.
What to include and what to leave out
For each qualification give the credential, the institution, the location if it is useful, and the completion or expected date. Add a major, honours or a relevant thesis only when it supports the role. Leave out secondary school once you hold a degree, and leave out a grade point average that does not help you unless an application asks for it.
Certifications and short courses
List certifications in a separate "Certifications" or "Training" section so they do not get lost inside the degree entry. Write the full name, the issuing body and the year, and note if one is in progress. A short course matters most when it fills a gap the posting names, so choose by relevance, not by how many you have.
International qualifications
If your degree comes from another country, add a plain-language equivalent when it helps, such as "Bachelor of Science (four-year degree)". Avoid claiming an equivalence you have not had assessed, and follow any instructions the employer gives about credential checks.
Keep dates consistent
Use the same date style as the rest of the resume, and make sure the years agree with your employment history. Gaps or overlaps between study and work are normal, but unexplained mismatches invite questions.
Check the final file
Export the document and confirm that the degree names and years extract in order with the ATS parser. Then compare the wording with a posting using resume job match to see whether any credential it names is missing from your text.
How do you list a degree in progress on a resume?
Write the degree, the school and your expected graduation date, and add "expected" or "in progress" so the status is never unclear. For example: "BS Computer Science, [University name], expected [Month Year]". Do not write a graduation date as if the degree were finished, and do not round up credits or grades. If an application form asks whether you hold the degree, answer the form accurately even when the resume says "in progress".
Add relevant coursework or a project only when it supports the job you are applying for, and keep it to one or two lines.
