Sam Rivera

Full Stack Developer

Chicago, IL | sam.rivera@example.com | linkedin.com/in/sam-rivera-example

Summary

Full stack developer with six years shipping web products from database to interface, mostly in TypeScript, React and Node.js. Comfortable owning a feature end to end, from the schema to the release, in small product teams.

Experience

Full Stack Developer - Subscription billing platform, hybrid2021 - Present

  • Owned the invoicing feature end to end in React, Node.js and PostgreSQL, from schema design to release, supporting 12,000 monthly invoices with no data-integrity incidents in two years.
  • Cut the slowest customer-facing query from 3.2s to 240ms by adding a composite index and rewriting an N+1 fetch, then documented the pattern in the team wiki so it stopped recurring.
  • Built a REST API consumed by the web app and two partner integrations, versioning endpoints so both partners could migrate on their own schedule, with 3 breaking changes shipped and no coordinated releases.
  • Moved deployments to a CI pipeline with automated tests, reducing release time from 2 hours of manual steps to about 15 minutes.

Web Developer - Logistics software startup, Chicago2018 - 2021

  • Built the customer portal in Vue and Node.js used by 300+ shippers, replacing a spreadsheet-and-email process that had taken staff about ten hours a week.
  • Wrote the SQL and reporting endpoints behind the operations dashboard, which the support team of 14 used to answer delivery questions without engineering help.
  • Introduced pull-request review and one shared staging environment as the team grew from 3 to 9 engineers, ending a habit of testing on production.

Weak bullets, rewritten

The most common full stack developer bullets and what a stronger version looks like. Each rewrite adds the thing the weak version leaves out.

Before

Full stack development using Node.js and React.

After

Built a self-serve refund flow across React, Node.js and PostgreSQL, removing about 40 support requests a week.

Why it works: Naming all three layers inside one accomplishment is what demonstrates range; the number shows it mattered.

Before

Optimised database queries.

After

Replaced an N+1 lookup on the orders list with a joined query and an index, cutting page load from 2.9s to 310ms.

Why it works: The rewrite shows the technique and the measurement, which lets another engineer judge whether it was well done.

Before

Deployed applications to the cloud.

After

Containerised the API and moved it to managed hosting behind a CI pipeline, so releases dropped from a monthly event to several a week.

Why it works: Deployment is a duty; changing how often the team could ship is an outcome.

Once your own version is written, run it through the ATS parser to confirm your titles and dates come through in order, then compare it with the posting using resume job match.

The summary

It states the ownership model in the last sentence: a feature end to end, in small teams. That answers the "specialist or generalist" question before the reader has to ask it.

The invoicing bullet

Naming all three layers (React, Node.js, PostgreSQL) in one accomplishment is what proves the range. The duration of the clean record makes the claim about reliability, not speed.

The query optimisation bullet

It gives a mechanism (composite index, an N+1 rewrite) so another engineer can judge it, and it closes with the documentation step, which shows the fix was made to last.

The versioned API bullet

Versioning for partners is a real backend judgement call. It shows the developer thought about people outside the team, which is what separates a senior full stack profile from a mid-level one.

The earlier role

It shows the trajectory: a first product built for real users, then a step up in scope. Growth across the two jobs is itself evidence.

The hard part of a full stack resume is showing range without looking shallow. Recruiters reading one are usually asking whether you are strong on one side or merely adequate on both. This example answers that by pairing each bullet with an end-to-end result, so the range reads as ownership rather than as a longer skills list.

Recommended Workflow

Step 1

Weight toward the side the posting weights

A frontend-heavy role wants the interface and performance bullets first; a platform-heavy role wants the schema and API work. The content is the same; the order changes.

Step 2

Match the database and cloud vocabulary

If the posting names MySQL or Azure and you have used them, say so in the bullet that used them. Do not swap in terms you have not worked with.

Step 3

Verify coverage before you send

Run the finished resume through the job description keyword finder against the posting, then check which named tools appear nowhere in your experience.

Common Mistakes This Page Can Help You Catch

Claiming both halves equally without proof

Listing every frontend and backend tool suggests breadth and depth in each, which few people have. Choose the two or three stack elements you can discuss in detail and let the rest sit in the skills list.

Splitting the resume into frontend and backend halves

Two separate sections read as two half-careers. Bullets that cross the stack, such as one feature from schema to interface, present one strong developer.

Leaving out deployment and reliability

Shipping is part of the job. A single line about release process or incident-free operation is often what convinces a hiring manager the person can be left alone.
