Start with the work behind the bullet

A data analyst experience section should explain the question you answered, what you did, and how the output was used. This workshop focuses on rewriting experience bullets. For a categorized list of relevant terms, use data analyst resume keywords.

All examples below are illustrative. Keep only details you can substantiate and replace the example context with your own. A plausible number is not evidence; if you do not have a measured outcome, describe the deliverable, scope, or decision instead.

Example 1: make SQL work specific

Before: Used SQL to create reports.

After: Joined billing and support records in PostgreSQL to identify unresolved account discrepancies; documented unmatched records for the operations team.

The rewrite names the tool, the data sources, the question, and the handoff. It does not claim that a report increased revenue. If you did not own the reconciliation rules, say that you implemented the agreed rules rather than designed them.

For a posting that requires window functions, include them only if you used them. A skills list can identify the technique; the bullet should explain its purpose, such as comparing each account's current activity with its previous reporting period.

Example 2: connect a dashboard to its audience

Before: Built Power BI dashboards.

After: Built a Power BI dashboard showing overdue invoices by account and aging band, with documented refresh checks for finance reviewers.

The tool name is useful, but the audience and question give the work meaning. If another team supplied the underlying dataset, keep that division clear. Creating visuals, modeling data, and maintaining a pipeline are different responsibilities.

To strengthen the bullet further, add a verified scope such as the reporting cadence or the number of supported business units. Do not attribute a downstream business change to the dashboard unless you can support that connection.

Example 3: describe communication as work

Before: Presented insights to stakeholders.

After: Explained differences between signup and activated-user counts to the product team, documented the metric definitions, and recommended separating the two measures in weekly reporting.

This describes what the discussion resolved. It gives an interviewer a concrete topic to explore without relying on phrases such as “excellent communicator.” If the recommendation was not adopted, do not write that you implemented it.

Example 4: label project experience honestly

Before: Data analysis expert with Python.

After: Cleaned a public transit dataset with pandas for a course project, documented missing-value handling, and compared weekday and weekend service patterns.

A project can demonstrate a method without implying employment or production ownership. Put it in a projects section and identify the dataset and context where appropriate. Keep personally identifiable or confidential data out of public portfolio links.

Review each rewrite against the posting

Choose one or two examples most relevant to the role. Check that every named tool is one you used and every outcome is one you observed. Keep employer names, dates, and responsibility levels consistent across your resume, application form, and interview answers.

Use the job-description matcher to identify terminology you may have omitted. It cannot verify your work or justify inserting unsupported claims. For analytics specializations, see the product analytics evidence guide.

Harvard's resume and cover-letter resources provide general document guidance. The examples here are original editorial exercises, not hiring-result case studies. After rewriting, read your bullets aloud and prepare to explain the inputs, checks, decisions, and limitations behind each one.
