How to Write a Nursing Resume That Passes Hospital ATS Systems in 2026
Organize nursing credentials, clinical experience, and relevant systems clearly. Check the employer’s instructions and application fields.
Why Nursing Resumes Are Different
Healthcare ATS platforms used by hospital systems (Epic Talent, HealthcareSource, Taleo Healthcare, Workday with healthcare modules) are calibrated differently from general ATS software. They look for specific structured fields that general resumes may not include:
- Licensure type and status (RN, LPN, NP, CRNA)
- State of licensure and compact state eligibility
- Specialty unit type (ICU, ER, NICU, Telemetry, Med-Surg, OR, L&D)
- Years of experience in specific unit types
- EMR and EHR system experience (Epic, Cerner, Meditech)
- Certifications (BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, CEN, CCRN, specialty certifications)
- Facility type experience (Level I Trauma, Magnet-designated, community hospital)
A nursing resume that does not surface these fields clearly is under-scored by healthcare ATS systems - even when the candidate's qualifications are strong.
The ATS-Optimised Nursing Resume Structure
Contact and Credentials Header
Immediately after your name, list your primary credentials in the format hospitals expect:
Sarah Johnson, BSN, RN, CCRN
Include: your state of licensure, whether you hold compact licensure, and your license number if required by the posting. Some healthcare ATS platforms parse the license number as a required field.
Professional Summary (4–6 lines)
The summary is your highest-weight ATS section. Include:
- Specialty and years of experience
- Unit type(s)
- One or two key certifications
- One specific achievement or strength
Example: "ICU Registered Nurse with 6 years of experience in Level I Trauma centers and cardiac surgical ICU settings. CCRN-certified. Experienced with Epic and Cerner EMR systems. Led charge nurse rotation and received two unit excellence awards for care quality metrics."
Certifications Section (Place High on the Page)
Place certifications immediately after the summary or in the top third of the resume - not at the bottom where most general resume templates put them. Healthcare recruiters and ATS systems look for certifications early.
List format:
- BLS - American Heart Association (current, expires MM/YYYY)
- ACLS - American Heart Association (current)
- CCRN - AACN (current)
- Charge Nurse Certification - [institution if applicable]
Include expiry dates where relevant. Many healthcare ATS systems check certification currency.
Skills Section: EMR and Clinical Skills
List your EMR/EHR systems explicitly: Epic, Cerner, Meditech, Allscripts, PointClickCare. These are parsed as structured keyword fields in healthcare ATS platforms.
List clinical skills using the terminology the job description uses, not abbreviations or institutional variations. "IV insertion" and "intravenous catheter placement" may refer to the same skill but be scored differently.
ATS Keywords for Common Nursing Specialties
Critical Care / ICU
Ventilator management, hemodynamic monitoring, vasopressor titration, arterial line, central venous catheter, Swan-Ganz catheter, CRRT, ECMO, rapid sequence intubation, sepsis protocol
Emergency Department
Triage, EMTALA, rapid assessment, trauma activation, chest pain protocol, stroke protocol, procedural sedation, trauma resuscitation, mass casualty incident
Med-Surg
Medication administration, wound care, patient education, discharge planning, case management coordination, fall prevention protocol, pressure injury prevention
Labour and Delivery
Fetal monitoring, electronic fetal monitoring, labour support, epidural assistance, neonatal resuscitation, postpartum care, breastfeeding support, HIPPA compliance
Common Nursing Resume ATS Mistakes
- Using only abbreviations: "RN" without "Registered Nurse" in the body of the resume may not trigger keyword matches in all systems
- Listing certifications at the bottom: certifications are often highly weighted in healthcare ATS - they belong in the top third
- Generic bullet points: "provided patient care" tells an ATS nothing. Specific actions with patient census or outcome data score significantly higher
- Missing EMR systems: if you have used Epic, list it explicitly - it is one of the most consistently weighted keywords in healthcare postings
