The letter

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the Backend Engineer role. Your posting describes a service that has grown faster than its original design, which is the situation I spent most of the last two years working in.

At my current company I owned the payments service through a period where request volume roughly tripled. The work that mattered was not rewriting it; it was adding the instrumentation to find out which three endpoints were responsible for most of the latency, then fixing those. Median response time came down from about 800ms to under 200ms, and we did it without a migration.

The part I would bring to your team beyond the code is the habit of writing things down. I wrote the runbook our on-call rotation still uses, largely because I was tired of being the person who got paged. Your posting mentions cross-team ownership, and in my experience that works when the documentation is good enough that other teams do not need to ask.

I would be glad to talk about how this applies to what you are building. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

Why it is written this way

  • It opens by naming something specific from the posting. That one sentence proves the letter was not sent to forty companies unchanged, which is the main thing an opening has to establish.
  • The achievement includes the constraint, not just the number. "Without a migration" is what makes 800ms to 200ms credible to another engineer, because it rules out the explanation they would otherwise assume.
  • It picks one thing beyond the technical work and grounds it in a real motivation. "I was tired of being the person who got paged" is honest and memorable where "excellent communication skills" is neither.
  • It stays under 250 words. A second achievement would have diluted the first, and the reader is deciding whether to open the resume, not making the hire from this page.

Adapt it against the posting you are actually applying to, then check the wording with the cover letter generator or compare the whole application with resume job match.

Evidence you have worked at their scale

Not bigger scale, theirs. An engineer reading applications for a team running a mid-size service is looking for someone who has handled that shape of problem, and a candidate describing systems two orders of magnitude larger reads as a poor fit rather than an impressive one. Name the scale you actually worked at and let it match.

Decisions rather than technologies

The stack is on the resume. What the letter can add is why you chose one approach over another and what it cost you. A paragraph that explains a trade-off tells a hiring engineer more about your seniority than any list of frameworks does.

Signs you will not need managing

Ownership language matters here in a way it does not in every field: taking a service through an incident, writing the runbook, noticing the problem before it was assigned. These are the details that separate a mid-level engineer from a senior one on paper.

Engineering cover letters fail in a specific way: they describe technologies rather than decisions. A list of frameworks is already on the resume, so repeating it in prose adds nothing. What a hiring engineer cannot get from the resume is how you think about a problem, which is what this letter is built to show.

Common Mistakes This Page Can Help You Catch

Listing the tech stack in sentence form

Turning your skills section into a paragraph is the single most common engineering cover letter mistake. It uses the whole letter to repeat information the reader already has, and it reads as though you had nothing else to say.

Numbers without their baseline

Improved performance by 60% is unfalsifiable. From what, over what period, under what load? Engineers are trained to ask exactly that, so an unqualified metric reads as weaker than a smaller one you can defend.

Opening with how long you have loved programming

Every applicant writes this and it carries no signal. It also spends the most-read sentence on your history rather than on their problem.
